Penarth Headland

Cardiff Bay

In collaboration with Techniker, we designed a 1km long elevated walkway linking Penarth with the Cardiff Bay Barrage. The design makes the connection fun and instructive as it moves from Penarth’s 19th century pier and esplanade to Cardiff Bay’s 20th century man-made topography, where it merges with a new harbour and promenade. In between it follows the tidal foreshore, a steel thread that spans 700m supported on only eight inclined textured in situ concrete piers. Along its length the rhythm of the tides will be offset by less predictable natural phenomena, and the commentary of commissioned art works.
