Antwerp Docks

Antwerp, Belgium

Antwerp's historic 170ha Napoleonic Docks were in need of regeneration and our proposals formed part of an overall city structure plan. They needed to reconcile the needs of the city and help generate a new city quarter.

Our plan extended an existing major city boulevard and tram lines into the area, while a new square, museum and business quarter augmented existing city functions, set in the drama of the docks. Streets, passages, courts and squares establish a series of new neighbourhoods, reinforcing the urban character inspired by the city and capable of adaptation for mixed-uses and varied architectural expressions.

The plan respects the old, yet has proper and economic provision for cars and public transport. It promises to provide a real, living extension to the city.
