Ayr Citadel

Scotland

Ayr Citadel's historic triangular site fronts the River Ayr and the sea with a 16th century fort behind it. A simple perimeter access strategy helped to establish a traditional pattern of hierarchical public and private spaces streets and courts.

The plot layouts and building forms reinforce this pattern and are suitable for a mix of uses complementing the existing functions and space of Ayr. The plan was adopted by Kyle and Carrick District Council in 1994, and its phased implementation is nearing completion.

enlightened strategy.
